Hyundai and Kia cars to get solar roofs from 2019 in international markets

Hyundai and Kia have just announced that they will be offering solar roof panels on their cars. While the markets and cars haven’t been specified, solar roofs, some with a translucent design will be made available from 2019.  Now this isn’t the first time that solar panels have made it to the roof. The Karma Revero sedan already has it and Audi has already announced plans to offer solar roofs. In the Hyundai and Kia cars, the solar roofs will be used to charge vehicle batteries and will initially be fitted to hybrids and even cars with conventional powertrains. In the latter, the generated power can be used to power ancillaries like the air conditioner or seat heaters, thus saving that little bit of extra energy to improve the overall efficiency. There are currently three systems in development. The first is a conventional silicon-based solar roof that will be fitted to hybrids and said to be capable of charging the battery between 30 and 60 percent of capacity within a day, depending on the level of sunlight. This will be followed by a more advanced design with translucent appearance and will be initially used on cars with conventional powertrains. Following solar roofs, Hyund...

Aventurine: Sparkling, Glittering, Mysterious, And Placing A Galaxy Of Stars On Your Wrist

In watchmaking, aventurine has swung in and out of fashion over the years. However, even though its use does seem a bit cyclic, I’ve never noticed it being used in anything but extremely rare occasions. So while many recognize the name “aventurine” and its distinctive look, it is not a widely known material in horology. Despite seeing aventurine in six new wristwatches at SIHH 2018 – more than the number of new tourbillons I counted there! – it remains a decorative artisanal element used only by luxury watchmakers in small series or unique pieces for its beauty and decorative properties. The Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda Métropolitaine Galaxy: one of six new watches with aventurine dials at SIHH 2018 Nonetheless, there remains some unclarity about what aventurine actually is, with watch brand representatives even claiming it to be a stone at times. Here is the truth about what aventurine really is and where it comes from. Aventurine was “discovered” by chance by Italian glassblowers in Venice in the seventeenth century, who discovered it “by chance,” which is the root of the name avventurina it was given. The original manufacturing license for it was granted at this time to the Mio...

At first blush, careers in craftsmanship may seem antiquated, conjuring images of a blacksmith working a forge or a seamstress operating a loom. However archaic these crafts may seem, creative endeavors like these and others still are viable commodities.  The creative industry is projected to grow 4 percent by 2026 and add nearly 35,000 jobs, according to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Knowing this, it’s fair to wonder how technology has changed the way creatives, well, create. Do woodworkers still saw and sand by hand? How has digital imaging changed the way photographers deliver portraits? To find out, we set out to capture Eastside artisans on the job.  From the invention of the camera obscura more than 1,000 years ago, to daguerreotype studios of the mid- to late-1800s to shopping mall portrait studios like Glamour Shots, portraiture always has been considered an artful occupation. However, the technological advances that placed cameras in many pockets largely challenged the field. How can one artisan compete against every millennial with a smartphone camera in portrait mode? One Eastside couple has an answer.  After lengthy corporate careers in California, ...

Some put an original and unexpected spin on something you’re familiar with, while others define the phrase “less than the sum of its parts.” Alpina falls into the first category by re-interpreting BMW’s greatest hits with more distortion. The B7, its flagship model, is not merely a 7 Series with a body kit and fancy-looking wheels. It’s not a substitute for the non-existent M7, either. Outwardly, it’s an unclassified species of super-sedan that wraps performance, comfort, technology, and exclusivity into one. I can’t think of a better place to get acquainted with it than the Bavarian roads it was developed on, so that’s the region I set out to explore after picking up a blue 2020 B7 – one of the first to roll off the assembly line – in front of the company’s headquarters in a picturesque German town named Buchloe. Sitting in the B7 feels a lot like sitting in the “normal” 7 Series, and the two sedans are built on the same assembly line in Dingolfing, Germany. Alpina’s range-topper recently received the same round of updates inside and out as BMW’s. Yes, that means the massive grille that’s bigger than the steering wheel in some of the econoboxes I...

Even with China’s demand for mixed shredded grades tapering, auto shredder operators remain the volume kingpins

Even with China’s demand for mixed shredded grades tapering, auto shredder operators remain the volume kingpins for nonferrous scrap. The 20th century split between iron and steel scrap yards and nonferrous scrap recycling specialists continues to seem more distant, despite the turmoil in mixed nonferrous shredded grade markets caused by China’s self-imposed blockade. Each of the 10 largest companies listed in Recycling Today’s updated list of North America’s Largest Nonferrous Scrap Processors operates shredding plants, with these yards drawing in ferrous and nonferrous material from networks of smaller facilities. Our list is based on figures of nonferrous processing volumes in 2018 provided by 16 of these companies. Four companies are listed that did not provide 2018 figures to Recycling Today, but they were ranked based on previously submitted figures and recently published reports or publicity materials. Most of the companies listed have shredding capacity as a shared trait, and each of them can be considered dominant players in their respective market regions. Companies supplying information to us did so knowing we would not disclose their exact volumes processed in 2018. ...

Reusable bag for fruits and vegetables from 100% renewable resources

In the supermarkets of the Swiss Coop corporation, there is now the Multi-Bag: a reusable bag for fruits and vegetables. This innovation is causing a stir among domestic consumers, being made of FSC-certified cellulose and having been awarded the Oecoplan label. The multi-bags can be used again and again and are thus an environmentally friendly alternative to disposable plastic bags. The multi-bag is made from Lenzing Modal®, a cellulose-based fiber. This has several advantages, because in contrast to the production of cotton, the energy and water consumption in the production and processing of cellulose fibers is much lower. Easy to useLenzing Modal® is made from shredded beech wood from FSC-certified managed forests in Central Europe. If necessary, they can even be washed, in the washing machine, at 30 degrees. The application is also particularly simple and practical. Shopping with the Multi-Bag is done in four steps.1. Place vegetables or fruits on the scale (without multi-bag)2. Keeping Tahoe very blue: Lake Tahoe’s clarity improved by 10.5 feet last year

Lake Tahoe’s water clarity improved in 2018 mainly due to a typical winter season and water flow on rivers and streams, according to a new study. The annual report by UC Davis researchers found the average clarity level in 2018 was 70.9 feet, a 10.5-foot increase from 2017. Two years ago clarity had dropped to a record low, partially due to record-breaking precipitation and unusually warm lake temperatures. Scientists measure clarity by lowering a 10-inch white disk into the water and noting the depth at which it become invisible. They took 26 readings from January through December in 2018. Clarity is typically best in fall and winter. The winter (December to March) average was 73.5 feet, with one reading in March measuring more than 100 feet. The lowest value was 50 feet in July 2018, while the summer average (June to September) was 61.7 feet. A number of factors impact the clarity of the lake, but a primary influence is the spring runoff, the water that pours into the lake as the snowpack melts. While a winter marked by excessive snow might be good for filling the lake with water, a massive snowpack sends rivers roaring in the spring and washes more sediment into the la...
